AutoCAD 2016 and maybe Revit 2016 can attach an NWD as reference. Getting the raw model files is the absolute best option, as it removes any inconsistencies or reduction in accuracy from converting between multiple drawing types e.g. Navisworks cannot export a model as IFC, only as NWD or NWC. The DWG -> 3DS -> DWG process has been popular in the past to quickly shell out complex solids. I hope this is the only way to export as a NWD file.
